Second Grade News

October 14-October 18

Here is a peek at what we will be working on.

Reading:   These are our new reading vocabulary words for this week.  They are the words that we will be learning to read.  A good way to help your child practice is to put this letter in a handy spot where you will see it as a reminder, and then have your child practice reading through the words a couple of times each day.

         keep         mother             myself               new
         warm       duckling           floating             beautiful
         hatch       beak                  chipped            explore
         laid           huddle              paddle              surface
         webbed

Our comprehension skill is compare and contrast.  When we think about how two or more things are alike, we are comparing.  When we think about how two or more things are different, we are contrasting.  Authors often use clue words to help us know when they are comparing and contrasting things.  Some of the clue words are: like, as, same, different, unlike, also, etc.  As you read with your child, please look for instances when the author is using clue words to compare and contrast two or more things.

Spelling:   Your child’s list of spelling words is attached to this letter.

Math:   We are working on memorizing our addition facts with sums (answers) up to 20.  A great way to help your child review at home is to make some math flashcards and practice for a few minutes each night.

Have a great weekend!
