Report Cards:  These will be sent home on Friday.
Have a great week!

Second Grade News

January 16-20

Here is a peek at what we will be working on this week.
This week we will be doing end of semester assessments in math and in reading.  For this reason our list of new vocabulary words is a little shorter.
Reading:  Our new vocabulary words for this week are:

          beautiful    even           great          become     together

          voice           bubbles      paws          quite          decide
Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child practice reading through it a couple of times each day.
Spelling:  Your child’s list of new words is stapled to this letter.
Math:  This week we will be learning how to do column addition with carrying.  In our math series this is referred to as U.S. traditional addition.  I would appreciate it if you could make up a few problems each night to help your child practice.
We will also be learning how to make a ballpark estimate as a way to check whether an answer to an addition problem makes sense.  For example, in 24+49,  24 is close to 20 and 49 is close to 50.  So, 20 +50=70 is the ballpark estimate.  This estimate helps us know that the answer to 24+49 should be close to 70.
Library:  We will return to the library on Wednesday.  Please make sure all books are returned so that more may be checked out.
Half-days on Thursday and Friday:  Since no lunch will be served on Thursday and Friday, I am asking that you send in a healthy snack or a small sack lunch for your child to eat in the classroom.  We are used to eating at 11:20, and this will help your child keep going until he/she gets home.  Dismissal time will be at 11:55.
Have a great week!

Second Grade News

January 9-13

Here is a peek at what we will be working on this week.
Reading:  Our new vocabulary words for this week are:

          bring          brought      next           picture       dinosaurs

          pours          echo           canyon       breath        fingers

          exact           order          camera      musical      invitation

          memory     amazing     read           chocolate
Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child practice reading through it a couple of times each day.
This week our comprehension skill will be studying the characters in our stories.  We will learn that authors have many ways to tell what their story characters are like.  Authors show what a character is like by what the character thinks, says, feels, and does.
Our phonics skill is learning to add the endings –ed and –es to words ending in the letter y.  We will learn to change the y to i before we add –ed or –es.  For example, cry + ed is spelled cried, and hurry + -es is spelled hurries.
Spelling:  Your child’s list of new words is stapled to this letter.
Math:  Thanks so much for helping your child with his/her nightly home link.  This is the best way for you to know exactly what we are studying in class as the home links are an extension of our class work.  Most of our work this week will focus on solving 2-digit addition problems mentally.  For example, in a problem such as 43 + 25 we would first think about adding 40+20=60 and then add 3+5=8.  We would then combine 60+8 to get an answer of 68.
Another mental strategy we will be using looks something like this.  45+32=?  Start at 45 and count up 30 (45, 55, 65, 75).   Now, you are at 75.  Then count up 2 more to arrive at the answer of 77.
A great way to help your child be ready for mental math is to practice counting up by 10’s beginning at any number.  For example, begin at 28 and count up by 10’s (28, 38, 48, 58, 68, etc.).
Have a great week!

Second Grade News

January 3-6

Here is a peek at what we will be working on this week.
Reading:  Our new vocabulary words for this week are:

          checkers              sparks                  dumped              complained

          immediately       wobbling             across                  either

          toward                 advertise             tidy                      pretzels

          through                sometimes
Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child practice reading through it a couple of times each day.
This week we will practice summarizing the stories we read.  This means that we will be telling about the most important parts of a story (character, setting, problem, events, ending) in a few short sentences.  As you read at home with your child, please take a few minutes to help your child summarize the stories.
Spelling:  This week, we have contractions for many of our spelling words.  As you help your child review at home, please remind him/her to put the apostrophe in the correct spot.
Math:  We will resume the Home Link (homework) part of our math today.  I am asking that you continue to check over your child’s work and help your child make any necessary corrections.  Also, please put your signature or initials on your child’s work so I know that your child has shown it to you.
Clothes For Recess:  Now that cold weather is here, please make sure your child has appropriate clothing for playing outside at recess-snowpants, boots, jacket, hat, mittens or gloves.  I would also recommend that your child keep an extra pair of socks and mittens in his/her backpack.  This way if one pair gets wet, your child can change into a dry pair and stay comfortable.
Bookbags:  Please make sure your child has returned his/her December bookbag and calendar so I can award the Pizza Hut slips and hand out the January calendar.
Library:  We return to the library on Wednesday.  Please make sure all books are returned so that more may be checked out.
Delayed Start:  Next Monday school will begin at 10:00.   Have a great week!
