Second Grade News

April 23-27

Here is a peek at what we will be working on this week.
Reading:  Our new vocabulary words for this week are:

            photograph               scissors             piece                  relief

          above                          few                     kept                    number

          sound                          glum                   track                   graph

          squawked                  ice                       lemonade
Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child practice reading through the words a couple of times each day.
Our reading comprehension skill for this week is realism and fantasy.  As we read we will be comparing and contrasting stories which are realistic fiction and those which are fantasy.
Spelling:  Your child’s new spelling word list is attached to this letter.
Bookbags:  As you read with your child please take a few minutes to have your child do a retell of the story.  If the story is fiction, ask your child to tell you the character, the setting, and what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  If the selection is non-fiction, ask your child to tell you the main idea and facts from the story.  Please continue to read with your child every night so your child is able meet the 90 words per minute reading benchmark at the end of the year.
Mileage Club:  Mrs. Kelly is still in need of a few more parent volunteers.   If you are interested in helping with this, her contact info is 825-2021 or ckelly@mcbain.org.
Mark Your Calendar:  Fun To Be Fit Day is in the afternoon on Friday, June 1.  Track and Field Day is Friday, June 8.  I will send more information later.
Have a great week!

This week we will be reading informational texts, and we will be using graphic sources to make sense of the selections.  We will learn that a graphic source is a chart, table, diagram, graph, etc. that an author puts in a selection as a way to give us information.
Spelling:  Your child’s new spelling words are attached to this list.
Library:  We return to the library on Thursday.  Please make sure all books are returned so that more may be checked out.
Bookbags:  Please continue to read with your child every night so your child is able meet the 90 words per minute reading benchmark at the end of the year.
Mileage Club:  This started today.  Mrs. Kelly is still in need of a few more parent volunteers.   If you are interested in helping with this, her contact info is 825-2021 or ckelly@mcbain.org.
Dry Erase Markers Needed:  At the beginning of the school year, the students brought in a dry erase marker to use with our white boards during math time.  Our markers are drying out, and we still have eight weeks of school remaining.  I am asking that you send in one or two new dry erase markers with your child so we can keep working until the end of the year.  Thanks so much!
Have a great week!

Second Grade News

April 9-13

Here is a peek at what we will be working on this week.

Reading:  Our new vocabulary words for this week are:

            cold                grow              most              move             near

            poison           octopus        reined           rescue           jellyfish

Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child practice reading through the words a couple of times each day.

This week as we read, we will be using graphic sources to make sense of a selection.  We will learn that a graphic source is a chart, table, diagram, graph, etc. that an author puts in a selection as a way to give us information.

Spelling:  Your child’s new spelling words are attached to this list.

Bookbags:  Please continue to read with your child every night.  At the beginning of the year our benchmark reading standard was 40 words per minute.  In January it was 70 words per minute.  In May the benchmark is 90 words per minute to be considered at grade level.  This can be as big hurdle for some children.  For this reason, I am asking that you make it a priority to spend 15-20 minutes a night reading with your child.  I know it gets hard in the spring, but I do appreciate the help you give your child.

Mileage Club:  This will be starting on Monday, April 16.  Mrs. Kelly needs parent volunteers to help run this program.  If you can help, you would be needed one day a week for six weeks.  You would be helping outside from 1:35-2:05, and then again from 2:25-2:50.  Please contact her if you can help out.  Her contact info is 825-2021 or ckelly@mcbain.org.

Dry Erase Markers Needed:  At the beginning of the school the students brought in a dry erase marker to use with our white boards during math time.  Our markers are dry and we still have nine weeks of school remaining.  I am asking that you send in one or two new dry erase markers with your child so we can keep working until the end of the year.  Thanks so much!
