                                                                                                  November 25, 2013

Parents,

Here is a peek of our upcoming special activities in December.

Classroom Christmas Party:  With Christmas soon approaching, I know that many of you like to do your shopping early.  We will be having our classroom Christmas party on Thursday, December 19.  For the party, I would like each child to bring in 26 small items to pass out to the members of our class.  Ideas of things for your child to bring include:  fancy pencils, erasers, bouncy balls, rubber snakes/insects, gum, small candies, candy canes, any tiny gift, etc.  The boys and girls love passing out a small item to every child in our class.  Just use your imagination, but please keep this very inexpensive.

Our party day is also being called Ugly Sweater Day in the elementary and middle school.  Please help your child find a sweater of this nature to wear to school on party day.  I like to think of this as my chance to wear my old comfy sweater to school!

Christmas Musical:  We will be having our Christmas Musical on Monday, December 16 at 7:00.  We would like to have the boys and girls line up in the multi-use room at 6:45.  Please have your child wear his/her dress clothes for the program (no blue jeans).

Kids’ Night Out:  As a fundraiser for our school, the elementary staff would like to watch your children from 5-8 pm on Friday, December 6.  We will provide a pizza supper and an evening filled with fun activities.  Please send in your child’s form and payment as soon as possible if you are interested.

Pizza Party:  Our classroom has won a pizza party from Pizza Hut because of the money we raised for Coins for Kids.  We will be given our pizza party as our lunchtime meal on Monday, December 3, and it will be served to us in our classroom at our regular lunchtime (11:10).

PTO Craft Show:  This will be on Saturday, November 30, 9am-3pm.

Wishing you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving!

Second Grade News
November 18-22

Reading:  Our new vocabulary words are:

          animals                before                 between             knew

why                     swallow               woodpile             few

dinosaurs             enemy                 medicine             scales

underneath         slither                  protect                peels

Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child practice reading through it a couple of times each day.

Our comprehension skill is graphic sources.  In selections that give facts, pictures or labelled diagrams are often used to make the information easier to understand.  These pictures and diagrams are called graphic sources.  As you read with your child at home, please take time to look for graphic sources in the stories.

Spelling:  Your child’s new list is attached to this letter.

Coins for Kids:  Wow! The generosity of the students in our class is amazing.  Our classroom came in second place by raising $200.67 to help fight world hunger.  We will be having a pizza party in the near future.  Our entire elementary school raised $1447.40.  Each dollar raised buys four meals for hungry children.

Elementary Christmas Musical:   We are busy practicing, and our musical will be on Monday, December 16 at 7:00 in the big gym.  Please mark your calendar.

Kid’s Night Out:  This will be on Friday, December 6.  Please remember to send in your child’s form and money if your child will be attending.

New Drop Off and Pick Up Procedures:  Just a reminder that these new safety practices begin today.  Thanks so much for your cooperation in dropping off and/or picking up your child by the elementary cafeteria.

Appropriate Dress:  With the weather getting colder it is important that your child is dressed appropriately for outdoor recess.  Please send snowpants, boots, hat, and gloves every day.  Also, please make sure your child has an extra pair of socks and mittens in his/her backpack in case a pair gets wet.  This way your child will always have warm, dry feet and hands.

Have a good week!
