Second Grade News

November 28-December 2
I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving with your families.  Here is a peek at what we will be working on this week.
Reading:  Our new vocabulary words for this week are:
         bore          insult                 ripe                     squeeze
         hurled       exclaimed        patch                  impatient
         prodded    ridiculous
We will be reading and comparing fiction and non-fiction stories about spiders.  We will also be looking at the sequence of events in a story, and we will be looking for sequence clue words such as:  first, second, next, then, last, and finally.  As you read at home with your child please take a few minutes to discuss the sequence of events in a story and look for sequence words.
Spelling:  The new spelling list for this week is stapled to this letter.
Math:  This week we will be counting combinations of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.  We will also be learning how to figure out how much change we would get back from a dollar.  For example, if an item costs 26 cents, the students will have to determine which coins would be needed to purchase it.  Then they will have to determine how much change they would receive if they bought a 26 cent item with a dollar bill.  Please take a few minutes every night to make up a few problems to practice with your child.
Elementary Christmas Program:  We will have our program on Monday, December 12 at 7:00 in the high school gym.
Classroom Christmas Party:  Our party will be on Tuesday, December 20.  For our gift exchange, I am asking each child to bring in 25 of a small item to pass out to the members of our class.  Please keep the items small and inexpensive.   Please do not spend more than a couple of dollars for the items.  Ideas of items to give out would be bouncy balls, pencils, erasers, colored pens, candy canes, gum, stretchy shape bracelets, tiny toys, etc. Just use your imagination.
Library:   We visit the library on Wednesday.  Please make sure all books are returned.
Bookbags:  Please make sure your child has turned in his/her November reading calendar.
 Have a great week!

Please put this list in a handy spot, and have your child read through it a couple of times each day.

Spelling:   The new word list is attached to this letter.

Math:  We have been working on subtraction.  This would be a great to get out the flashcards and help your child finish memorizing these facts.

Library:  We return to the library on Wednesday.  Please make sure all books are returned so that more may be checked out.

Veteran’s Day Visitor:  Last Friday we had the privilege of having Sarah Barber speak to our class.  Sarah is in the army and is currently serving in Kabul, Afghanistan.  She told us what she does in her position, and she told us about what life is like for the Afghan boys and girls. Our elementary is attempting to collect 3000 nonperishable and canned items for the troops in Sarah’s company.  We are collecting items until November 18.  Have a great week!
