 Dear Parents,
On Monday, December 19, our Santa’s Workshop will start at 9:30.  I am still missing CDs and $1 from many children.  They are due Dec. 15th.  Right now I am planning on Becky Cotter, Mike Kitson, Kristin Whipple, Kaci Roller, and Scott DeRuiter.  Please be here around 9:20.

Our Christmas party will be in the afternoon on Tuesday, December 20.  I do not need any parent help, but I do need help with treats.  Please look below for your child’s name.
Carsten-1 quart of vanilla ice cream
Reese-1 quart of vanilla ice cream
Kayda-1 quart of vanilla ice cream
Anna-a big bag of chips
Karly-a big bag of chips
Hunter-a 2 liter of root beer
Aleah-1 quart of vanilla ice cream
Karri-paper plates and napkins (at least 27)
Alex-plastic spoons (at least 27)
Derrick-12 oz. or larger plastic cups (at least 27)
Macy-a 2 liter of root beer
Wesley-a 2 liter of orange soda

For the gift exchange at our party, I would like each child to bring in a small gift for everyone.  You could go to a dollar store or Wal-Mart and find one item that you can get multiples (for example:  rubber insects, snakes, frogs, bouncy balls, stickers, candy, pencils, erasers, etc.).  This is not meant to break your pocket book.  Please try and keep it under $4.
On Wednesday, December 21, we will have a sing along in the morning and movies in the afternoon.
Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Mrs. Wimmler

Spelling:  The new spelling list for this week is stapled to this letter.
Math:  We will continue practicing how to make change from a dollar.  We are learning how to count up from the cost of an item to 100.  For example, if an item costs 26 cents, the students are learning to start counting up from 26 until they reach $1.00 to determine the amount of change due back .  Please take a few minutes every night to make up a few problems to practice with your child.
Elementary Christmas Program:  We will have our program on Monday, December 12 at 7:00 in the high school gym.
Santa’s Workshop:  This will be on Monday, December 19 from 9:30-11:00.  Please make sure your child has a CD and $1.00 sent in by December 15 so we can get everything purchased and set up for the workshop.  We could use 1 or 2 more parents to help with this.  Please let me know if you can come to help for a little while that morning.
Classroom Christmas Party:  Our party will be on Tuesday, December 20.  Please have your child bring in 25 small items for our gift exchange.
 Have a great week!

October 24th News

                                                                                                                        October 24, 2011
Parents,
Thank you for being so understanding when we had to adjust our field trip plans to Klackle Orchards.  The boys and girls had a wonderful experience.
Here is a peek at what we will be working on this week:
Reading:  Our new vocabulary words for this week are as follows:

            because                    carry              don’t              goes               whole

            microscope             pupil              hidden          amount         messages

            telescope                 thumb           brain              mirror           skull

Our phonics skill is the long vowel sound made by the letters igh in words such as sight and might.  Our new comprehension skill is steps in a process.  This week as we read informational stories we will be looking for the clue words of first, next, then, and last to help us make sense of the order in which events are occurring.
Math:   We will be learning about fact families and using the idea for fact families to help us learn our addition and subtraction facts.  For example, the numbers 2, 9, and 11 are a fact family and go together to make these problems:      2+9=11            9+2=11          11-2=9       11-9=2
Spelling:  The new words for this week are attached to this letter.
Halloween:  We will be celebrating Halloween on Monday, October 31st in the afternoon.  Please have your child bring his/her costume in a bag with your child’s name on the bag. We will be parading downtown starting at 1:00.  After the parade, we will return to the classroom to have a Halloween snack and to watch a video.
We will be making a trail mix for our snack at the party.  I am asking each child to bring in one cup of an item to add to the trail mix.  You may want to choose from one of these suggestions:  raisins, miniature marshmallows, dry cereal, popcorn, goldfish crackers, small pretzels, chocolate chips, m+m’s, skittles, etc.  Please make sure that there are no peants or peanut butter in your contribution.  You may send it in at any time.
Have a great week!

News for October 14

                                                                                                                        October 14, 2011

Parents,

Here is a peek at what we will be working on next week:

Reading:  Our new reading vocabulary words are :

            keep              mother                     myself                       new                warm

            beak               chipped                    duckling                    explore         hatch

            huddle          laid                             paddle                       surface          webbed

Please put this letter in a handy spot and have your child practice reading the words a couple of times each day.

Our new comprehension skill is compare and contrast.  We will learn that authors can teach us about two or more things when they describe how things are alike and different.  In our reading, we will be comparing and contrasting fiction and non-fiction stories about ducks.

Spelling:   Our new spelling words are:  passes, passing, teaches, teaching, wishes, wishing, mother, myself, danger, and paint.

Math:   We are working on memorizing our addition facts.  This week we practiced our doubles facts (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, etc.).  Next week we will use our doubles facts to practice doubles +1 and doubles -1.  The students will learn that if you know a double, you know the 1-more and 1-less sums.  For example, if you know that 4+4=8, then you know that 4+4=9 and 4+3=7.  Please take a few minutes each night to make up a few doubles +1 and doubles -1 facts for your child to practice.

Homework and Bookbags:  I am so pleased with the homework and bookbags that are returned every day.  This takes real commitment on your part.  Thanks so much for all the support you and giving to your second grader.

Library:  We return to the library on Wednesday.  Please make sure all books are returned so that more may be checked out.

Field Trip Reminder:  We visit Klackle Orchards on Thursday.  Please make sure all notes and money are sent in by Monday.  Have a great weekend!
