Second Grade News

        April 8-12

Reading:  These are our new vocabulary words for this week:

          course                  hear           things         which                  years

          glides                   steers         bay             compass              crew

          currents               deck           dock           engines     
Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child read through it a couple of times each day. 
This week as we read we will be determining whether a passage is a fact or an opinion.  We will learn that a fact is something that can be proved true or false.  An opinion cannot be proved true or false.  It is what someone thinks or feels.
Spelling:  Your child’s list of words is attached to this letter.
Math Test on Thursday:  We will be reviewing fractions Monday through Wednesday.  Look for the study guide to come home by Wednesday.  Please take a few minutes to go over it with your child so he/she is ready for the test on Thursday.
Mileage Club:  This starts up again on Monday, April 15.  Mrs. Kelley is in need of a couple more parent volunteers.  If you would be able to help out please call and leave a message at the school (825-2021) or contact her at ckelly@mcbain.org.
Bookbag Calendars:  If your child has not returned his/her March reading calendar, please make sure your child returns it as soon as possible so I can give out the March reward and issue the April calendar.

Second Grade News

March 25-28
Reading:  Our new vocabulary words are:
            crops          trade          humble                edge           imagine
          roam           fabric         pleasures            trembling
 Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child practice reading through it a couple of times each day.
Our comprehension skill is character.  When we read we can learn what a character is like by what the character says and does.  As you read with your child please take a few minutes to discuss the characters in the stories.
Spelling:  Your child’s new list is attached to this letter.
Library:  We return to the library on Monday.  Please make sure all books are returned so that more may be checked out.
Reading Month Reminders:
Reading in the Jungle:  We will be reading in the jungle on Tuesday.  Please have your child bring a stuffed animal to school for this activity.
Jammies in the Jungle Day:  This is on Thursday.  Your child may wear his/her pajamas to school.
Report Cards:  These will be sent home on Thursday.

REMINDERS:

Each Friday in March is Popcorn Friday.  Please send in 25 cents so your child can enjoy a bag of popcorn while we read.

Friday, March 15 is Jungle Print Day.  Have your child wear spots, stripes, leopard or zebra prints.

Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child read through it a couple of times each day.  I am seeing huge reading gains in the children who have been reviewing these words at home on a regular basis. 
This week as we read, we will be talking about the plot of a story.  We are learning that the plot of a story is what happens from beginning to end.  As you read with your child at home, please take time to discuss the important events in the beginning, middle, and end of a story.

March is Reading Month:   Our theme is “Go Wild for Reading.”  These are our special dress-up days
Friday, March 8 –colors of the rainforest day (wear crazy colors together)
Friday, March 15-animal print day (wear spots, stripes, leopard or zebra print, etc.)
Friday, March 22-dress as a favorite storybook character
Thursday, March 28-jammies in the jungle day (wear your pajamas to school)
Popcorn Fridays:  Every Friday in March the students will have a chance to buy a bag of popcorn to be enjoyed at school during the day.  The cost will be 25 cents a bag.  The money will cover the cost of making the popcorn and any extra money will be donated to a “Save the Rainforest” cause.
