Second Grade News

       March 4-8

Reading:  These are our new vocabulary words for this week:

          family                  finally                  morning              paper      mall

          wriggle                wailed                 gulped                 gnats       calm

          diary                    gathered             hospital               photos

          retrace                overnight            really
Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child read through it a couple of times each day.  I am seeing huge reading gains in the children who have been reviewing these words at home on a regular basis.
This week as we read, we will be talking about the plot of a story.  We are learning that the plot of a story is what happens from beginning to end.  As you read with your child at home, please take time to discuss the important events in the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
Spelling:  Your child’s new list is attached to this letter.
March is Reading Month:   Our theme is “Go Wild for Reading.”  These are our special dress-up days
Friday, March 8 –colors of the rainforest day (wear crazy colors together)
Friday, March 15-animal print day (wear spots, stripes, leopard or zebra print, etc.)
Friday, March 22-dress as a favorite storybook character
Thursday, March 28-jammies in the jungle day (wear your pajamas to school)
Popcorn Fridays:  Every Friday in March the students will have a chance to buy a bag of popcorn to be enjoyed at school during the day.  The cost will be 25 cents a bag.  The money will cover the cost of making the popcorn and any extra money will be donated to a “Save the Rainforest” cause.
Have a great weekend!
