Second Grade News
January 9-13
Here is a peek at what we will be working on this week.
Reading: Our new vocabulary words for this week are:
bring brought next picture dinosaurs
pours echo canyon breath fingers
exact order camera musical invitation
memory amazing read chocolate
Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child practice reading through it a couple of times each day.
This week our comprehension skill will be studying the characters in our stories. We will learn that authors have many ways to tell what their story characters are like. Authors show what a character is like by what the character thinks, says, feels, and does.
Our phonics skill is learning to add the endings –ed and –es to words ending in the letter y. We will learn to change the y to i before we add –ed or –es. For example, cry + ed is spelled cried, and hurry + -es is spelled hurries.
Spelling: Your child’s list of new words is stapled to this letter.
Math: Thanks so much for helping your child with his/her nightly home link. This is the best way for you to know exactly what we are studying in class as the home links are an extension of our class work. Most of our work this week will focus on solving 2-digit addition problems mentally. For example, in a problem such as 43 + 25 we would first think about adding 40+20=60 and then add 3+5=8. We would then combine 60+8 to get an answer of 68.
Another mental strategy we will be using looks something like this. 45+32=? Start at 45 and count up 30 (45, 55, 65, 75). Now, you are at 75. Then count up 2 more to arrive at the answer of 77.
A great way to help your child be ready for mental math is to practice counting up by 10’s beginning at any number. For example, begin at 28 and count up by 10’s (28, 38, 48, 58, 68, etc.).
Have a great week!
