Second  Grade News

December 9-13

Here is a peek at what we will be working on:

Reading:  These are our new vocabulary words.  Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child practice reading through the words a couple of times each day.

            friend                       show             since             those             been
            giants                       gripped        batter           pitched        thousand
            bounced                  advice          serious         terrible        baseball
            returned

Our comprehension skill is summarizing.  When we summarize, we tell about the most important parts of a story in just a few short sentences.  We tell about the character, setting, problem, important events, and the solution to the problem or the ending.  As you read with your child please take a few minutes to help your child summarize the story.

Spelling:   Your child’s new list is stapled to this letter.

Elementary Christmas Musical:  This will be on Monday, December 16 at 7:00 in the high school gym.  We would like the boys and girls to line up in the multi-use room at 6:45.  Please have your child wear his/her dress clothes (no jeans).

Classroom Party:  Our party will be in the afternoon on Thursday, December 19.  For our Christmas gift exchange I would like each child to bring in 26 small items to pass out to the members of our class.  You could go to a dollar store, Wal-Mart, etc. to find one item that you can get in multiples.  For example:  rubber insects, snakes, frogs, bouncy balls, stickers, candy, gum, pencils, pens, erasers, and lots of other ideas.  Just use your imagination and have fun with it, but please keep this very inexpensive (no more than a couple of dollars).

Trail Mix:  I would also like the boys and girls to bring in an item for a class trail mix that we will eat at our party.  Please send in one cup of a munchy item for your child to put in our mix.  Ideas of things to send would be popcorn, pretzels, goldfish crackers, raisins, etc.  (no peanuts or peanut butter).

Have a great weekend!
