Second Grade News

    May 13-May 17

Reading:  These are our new vocabulary words for this week:
            stranger        jealous      both         making              mean
          onions            judge         any           delicious            peddler
          contest         add             prepared
Please put this list in a handy spot and have your child read through it a couple of times each day.  This week our comprehension skill is plot.  We will be thinking about the important events that happen at the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
Math- Counting up to make change:  We are learning how to count up to make change from $1.00, $5.00, and $10.00.  This can be a little tricky for second graders.  I would like you to take a few minutes each night to help your child practice.  This is an example of the types of problems we are working on:
You buy a gallon of milk for $2.59.  You give the cashier $5.00.  How much             money do you get back?
To solve problems like this, we are learning to count up.  First, we count up from the 59 cents to the next dollar.  That is 41 cents, and it brings us up to $3.00.  Next, we count the dollars up from $3 to $5.  That is $2.  Then, we put the dollar and cents amounts together to determine that we should get $2.41 in change.
Spelling:  Your child’s new list is attached to this letter.
Fun To Be Fit Day:  This will be on Friday, May 24 at 1:00.
Track and Field Day:  This will be on Wednesday, June 5.  Please let Mrs. Kelley know if you can help with this.
Have a great weekend!
